Some thoughts on the new LotV update (2015-02-12)

av Madeleine Leander

Yesterday Blizzard made another update on the development of Legacy of the Void (multiplayer). The update contains some interesting ideas while it also give me the feeling that the beta isn’t as close as I had hoped.

I’m really looking forward to LotV. Blizzard are making some really cool changes that I think will make the game more exciting. I have to be honest here, the variation in matches is not as big as I’d like at the moment. I’d love to see more possibilities, especially for Zerg of course (not biased).

I’m also hoping for more changes outside of the gameplay, as I talked about in a previous blog post. I was hoping for a beta quite soon but it seems like it will take a while since there are big changes in the making, such as units being removed or redesigned and experiments to slow down the pacing of combat and more. I think it would be good for the development to launch the beta as soon as possible to let a bigger group of people take part in the testing. However I think it’s important that they take the time to design the units carefully before the beta. Right now the changes are very large, for example the Herc is being removed and a new Protoss unit is in the making. The design is important and has to take some time.

Reduced attack speed. If we forget about Swarm Hosts and Ravens, the lategame combats are usually quite short. You can often call the outcome during the first 10 seconds of a fight. And it doesn’t give a lot of room for super cool micro. I don’t necessarily think it’s bad as it is but I think it could be better. At the moment Blizzard are “experimenting with slowing down the pacing of combat”. I think it’s a great idea. It can open up for more micro and make the fights more interesting. Blizzard tried to reduce the attack speed of every unit by 40 % together with some changes in damage values. I’m not sure this is the best way to go. It will have a big impact not only for the big combats but also for the small and early fights. I’d prefer if the small fights stayed the same while the big fights got slowed down. I don’t have a good solution yet, but I’ll keep thinking about it :). Ideas?

Roach burrow. If you upgrade Burrow you will get burrow movement for free! This is a change that I’m really looking forward to and that I hope goes through. When the Burrow upgrade was moved from lair tech to hatchery tech I tried a lot of different roach builds involving Burrow. I liked them a lot but they were quite risky and not as efficient as I had hoped. If this change goes through I think that it will not only open up for some cool openings, but also for more harassment during the whole game. And I think Zerg needs both. I’ve been complaining about how few possibilities Zerg players have at the start of the game since HotS came out and this is a step in the right direction I think. I’d prefer another early game unit for Zerg but that seems out of the question so I’m welcoming the Roach change with open arms!

The update from Blizzard contains a lot more and can be found here.
